Nuclear imaging is a branch of medical imaging which uses small amounts of radioactive tracers to diagnose, to determine severity of the disease, and treat various chronic disorders such as cancers, cardiac diseases, gastrointestinal and neurological abnormalities. PET nuclear imaging has multiple applications in clinical neurology, includes epilepsy, movement disorders, brain tumors, dementia, neuronal plasticity, and stroke. Also, it is used to diagnose oncology, cardiology (has some limited applications), and other neurodegenerative disorders. However, the majority of PET scans are used to diagnose and treat cancers. The radioactive tracers concentrate in the regions of cancer, which are detected by the PET nuclear imaging.
