Frigates are a type of warship built for speed and maneuverability. Currently, frigates are used for protecting other warships and merchant-marine ships, primarily as anti-submarine warfare combatants for amphibious expeditionary forces. Frigates resemble corvettes, cruisers, destroyers and even battleships. Nearly all modern frigates are equipped with offensive or defensive missiles, and are rated as guided-missile frigates. Such helicopters are usually equipped with sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detectors, wire-mounted dipping sonar and torpedoes.
Development of stealth technology has also resulted in its application in frigates. It was introduced in modern frigate design by the French La Fayette class. New frigate ships are designed to offer a minimal radar cross section, which also lends them good air penetration. In the German Navy, frigates replaced some of the ageing destroyers. In terms of size and role, the current German frigates exceed the former class of destroyers. The German F125-class frigate is one of the largest class of frigates globally with a displacement of about 7,200 tons.
