Global Commercial Airport Radar Systems Market - Segmented by Range, Application and Geography - Growth, Trends and Forecast (2022 - 2030)

Any occurrence at an aerodrome that involves the incorrect presence of a person, vehicle or aircraft on the protected area of a surface that is used for the landing and take-off of aircraft can be called as runway incursions. Runway incursions are one of the major problems that are faced by the airport authorities. For instance, in July 2018, a Singapore - Chennai Air India flight was grounded at Chennai airport after taking a bird hit while coming into land. The Dreamliner aircraft with 172 passengers was gliding down at 400feet over Officers Training Academy, to touch down on the Guindy-end of the main runway, when the bird strike took place. AAI has been trying to minimize bird hits by discussing with the local bodies around the airport. To avoid these increasing runway incursions, the need for advanced radar systems is increasing.

Also, lower airfares, increasing living standards, and the growing middle-class population in large emerging markets, such as China and India, are major contributors to improving air travel. The middle class, in both countries combined, grew from 80 million, in 2000, to 135 million in 2016, exhibiting an increase of nearly 70 percent. To accommodate the increasing air passengers, new airports are being built, or the expansion of existing airports are taking place around the world which in turn is generating demand for advanced radar systems for efficient tracking and surveillance. Commercial Airport Radar Systems Market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of over 4% and expected to reach over USD 16 billion by the year 2023.

Based on application, the commercial airport radar systems market is segmented into surveillance radar, tracking radar and weather radars. The use of weather radars in airports has been of much importance due to the requirement of monitoring weather conditions as they might hamper the airlines' operations. If the weather conditions are not monitored, landing and take-off operations are effected which will risk the lives of the passengers. For example, in January 2018, US Airlines canceled more than 1,100 flights, and more than 3,000 flights were grounded due to a massive storm, stranding thousands of passengers, while low visibility and strong winds diverted dozens of other flights. Similarly, there are many more incidents where due to bad weathers, scheduled airplanes were canceled.

North America region is has the highest share in the year 2017 which is mainly due to procurement of the advanced radars by the airports to meet the safety regulations that are set by International Air Transport Association (IATA), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other regulatory bodies for the safety of the passengers. Also, expansion and modernization of airports in the US have generated the requirement of new radar systems that provide better surveillance and tracking functions. The Asia Pacific region is expected to have the highest growth rate as the number of passengers preferring air travel is increasing in this region.

Major Players:
BAE Systems, HENSOLDT, TERMA, Raytheon Company, Rockwell Collins among others.

Recent Developments:
Jul 2018: Météo-France, the national meteorological service in France, has provided a contract to Mitsubishi Electric for providing Doppler Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. This “DIABREZZA” system, can detect wind shear in clear-air conditions unlike more conventional radars, works by detecting laser light back-scattered by aerosols, dust, and other particles in the atmosphere.

May 2018: Raytheon Company announced that Mississippi radar manufacturing plant is undergoing an expansion of 50,000 square feet with an investment of USD 100 million. This new facility will be a part of Raytheon’s Consolidated Manufacturing Center and is expected to be completed by 2023.

Mar 2018: Hensoldt and Raytheon Company have entered a partnership to jointly develop and market advanced airport surveillance radars to improve air traffic safety. The combination of Hensoldt’s primary radar airport surveillance radar, its monopulse secondary surveillance radar, and Raytheon’s Mode S monopulse secondary surveillance radar will provide the optimum solution.
