Global Bio-based Adhesives & Sealants Market - Segmented by Raw Materials, End-user Industry and Geography - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2022-2030)

The market for bio-based adhesives & sealants is expected to register a CAGR of 4.49% during the forecast period, 2018 to 2023. This growth is primarily driven by the increasing demand from the packaging sector and stringent regulations for conventional adhesives in the United States.

Increasing Demand from the Packaging Sector
Bio-based adhesives are finding increasing applications in the packaging sector, majorly for PET container packaging, flexible packaging, corrugated boards, carton side seams, and film-foil laminates. Flexible packaging is the second-largest packaging application segment of the overall packaging market, owing to various advantages, such as requiring 91% less material than rigid packaging, and about 96% of space saving. In the food industry, flexible packaging is being largely preferred due to its moisture absorption properties, product freshness, and temperature control while maintaining the shelf life of the product.

Demand for lightweight and innovative packaging solutions from the food industry is majorly driving the consumption of bio-based adhesives. Corrugated boxes are among the fastest growing packaging materials. These boxes are the favored choice of various industries, such as food and beverage, automotive, FMCG, pharmaceutical, durable goods, and tobacco, among others. Expanding e-retailing business, and the usage of recycled paper, are fuelling the demand for corrugated boxes. Moreover, rising industrial activity, especially in the manufacturing and retail industry, is the major driver for the demand for corrugated boxes, as they are used for protection and transportation of goods. Also, many research activities are being carried out for sorting out newer bio-based adhesives for usage as tapes, in packaging applications. For instance, engineers at the University of Delaware have successfully developed a technique to produce packaging tapes from lignin.

Soy Raw Material Segment to Contribute Significant Demand to the Market
Soy is a renewable and a user-friendly raw material that is widely used for manufacturing of adhesives used in wood composites manufacturing. Soy-based adhesives are considered as alternatives for urea formaldehyde and phenol-based adhesives. Soy raw material occupies the largest share of the total raw materials that are used for the manufacturing of bio-based adhesives and sealants. The major factor that is considered for the replacement of soy over others, is the increase in the raw material prices for urea (made from methanol that is made from natural gas and is the product of ammonia and formaldehyde) and phenol (derived from benzene). Recently, the International Agency for Cancer Research Institute has classified formaldehyde as a known carcinogen that creates health-related problems for the manufactures and the end users of wood composites. Even though both phenol-formaldehyde and urea are not completely replaced by soy-based adhesives, manufacturers are fast developing new technologies that improve the performance of these soy-based adhesives and to find products that are commercially viable. The most recent technology involves the usage of soy flour/soy meal in formaldehyde-free adhesives manufacturing, to minimize the formaldehyde emissions from the resin in the wood composite boards.

One of the biggest successes of the United Soybean Board funded research program is the usage of soy in the formaldehyde-free glues for use in the interior hardwood plywood segment. Naturally, available soy protein exhibits less strength and less resistance to water. Soybean protein unfolding and modification is necessary for achieving better adhesion, as well as, good properties in manufactured products of soybean-based adhesives. Different chemicals that are used to unfold soybean proteins are organic solvents, alkaline, surfactants, guanidine, urea, and protease enzymes.

Currently, there are four methods for the development of soybean-based adhesives. The first one is the addition of soybean flour to the synthetic adhesives that reduces consumption of the synthetic adhesives. The second method is the use of soy flour as an extender in the PF resins for plywood manufacturing. The third method is the denaturation of soy proteins. The soybean protein is first denatured under various conditions and chemicals and is later used as adhesives. The fourth method is by the usage of cross-linking agent for curing soybean protein and is later used as an adhesive.

Europe to Dominate the Market
Europe represented the largest regional market for global bio-based adhesives & Sealants market in 2017. This immense demand for bio-based adhesives & sealants is a consequence of the growing stringent environmental regulations for conventional adhesives in the region. In Europe, Germany provides the major market for the bio-based adhesives & Sealants with more than 29% of the regional market share. The growing packaging, woodworking and construction industries in the countries like France, Germany, and Italy are further augmenting the demand for bio-based adhesives & sealants market. There is a growing demand for small size as well as premium packaging from the personal care and food & beverage sectors in Europe. Despite the predominant usage of conventional adhesives in the packaging sector currently, the shift towards bio-based adhesives is expected to take place at a steady rate in the coming years.
