A laparotomy sponge is a highly absorbent and tightly-woven cotton gauze with radiopaque tapes or a detectable X-ray string on the sides. Laparotomy sponges are of two types: sterile and non-sterile. The sponge is placed under the edge of an incision to protect soft tissues and exposed organs during surgery. It absorbs blood and exudates from the incised region at target site. There has been a surge in life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and neurological disorders across the world that has led to a soaring need for medication and often surgeries, both critical and normal.
